Cicada Citizen Science
Participate in a survey of periodical cicadas this spring.
Periodical cicadas in the genus Magicicada emerge in vast numbers every 17 years in northeastern Illinois.
As cicada citizen scientists, county residents can help the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County document periodical cicadas and map the areas where these insects are seen. Join an informational session on May 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center in Oak Brook.
Participants will learn identification and recording methods to document the emergence. They will be asked to visit an area during the time of the emergence and record the presence and/or absence and abundance of the 17-year cicadas. Survey forms will be supplied to these volunteers. Or, you may also download a survey form here:
- Download the Periodical Cicada Survey Form (78 KB PDF)
Surveys will then be collected, and results recorded. Those who participate will learn about other cicada citizen scientists' results, too.
For more information, call (630) 850-3722. Reservations begin April 30.
